Ain, in the Auvergne Rhône-Alpes region, is brimming with culture, heritage and breathtaking scenery. Its historic towns, majestic castles, beautiful mountains and lakes are full of opportunity!
Ain is best discovered on foot or by bike, with lots of hiking trails and cycle paths that criss-cross the countryside. If you're a nature lover like us, you'll be seduced by the oak forest of Seillans, the underground river in the Cerdon caves, the unusual Sermoyer dunes, the salt pans of Bex, the Lavours marshes, the Pertes de la Valserine, Lac du Bourget or the natural hot springs of Divonne-les-Bains...
But there are also lots of historical monuments, such as the Royal Monastery of Brou, the Château de Joux and the Basilica of St-Martin-de-Lons, and characterful towns and villages to wander, like Pérouges, Mijoux and Trévoux. If you were to visit just one, perhaps head to Pérouges, a medieval market town classified as one of the most beautiful villages in France. Or if you crave something more active than a wander, organise a day of horse riding, climbing, paragliding or dog sledding.
Last but not least, Beaujolais country, in the heart of the Ain region, should probably be on your itinerary for a vineyard tour and of course a wine tasting!
