In Vaucluse, not only can you dance on the Pont d'Avignon, just like in the song, but you could spend the whole day wandering the huge, walled city of Avignon. The charm of its culture, history, shops and restaurants will seduce you for sure. The highlight is the Palais des Papes, of course, the former residence of the pope (in the Middle Ages).
Meanwhile, donning your lycra and tackling the legendary Mont Ventoux – a frequent feature on the Tour de France route – should be on the to-do list of anyone with a passing interest in road cycling. (There are loads of bike rental shops nearby so you just need your own shoes and kit.) Even for non-cyclists, this giant of a mountain with its very unusual, barren landscape, makes for an interesting drive. And, of course, the views are amazing.
The Luberon mountain range is the perfect place for long walks or family bike rides, with trails criss-crossing the area. The lavender fields here are also a great draw (during lavender season). And did we mention the many wineries, selling direct to consumers?
