Why did we choose the Loire Valley?
Well, it's a UNESCO World Heritage Site and there are many reasons for that: fairytale castles and stunning gardens, delicious wines made at beautiful vineyards, the impressive river itself and the geography it has created…. AND La Loire à Vélo - a unique, 900km cycle route to enjoy in stages, over a short break or a long holiday. The meandering cycle paths that form this route are, hands-down, the best way to discover the delights of the Loire Valley, in our book. They might have invented the phrase 'slow tourism' to describe this experience!
The Loire à Vélo forms the western section of a larger EuroVelo route (the European cycle route network). In fact, Eurovelo route 6 runs all the way from the Atlantic in France to the Black Sea in Romania. In addition to that website, Loire By Bike (an initiative of the relevant regional tourism bodies) and France Vélo Tourisme are great resources for planning your rides.
Another great thing about planning a holiday around the Loire Bike Trail is the accessibility of the region. You can start your trip in historic Orléans or lovely Tours (just an hour from Paris by train), picking up rental bikes or taking a transfer to your campsite from there.
