Midi-Pyrénées is a stunning coastal region in southern France, between Provence and the border with Spain. This is its historical name : Midi-Pyrénées has in fact now been merged with Languedoc-Roussillon to become the Occitanie region of today.
Part of the region is in the Pyrenees mountains and offers magnificent hikes with breath-taking panoramas such as the Pic du Midi, Pic du Montcalm and Cirque de Cagateille. There are also caves for caving enthusiasts, cols for cyclists – such as the Col du Tourmalet, a regular appearance in the Tour de France – and rivers and lakes, for wild swimming at its wildest.
The Midi-Pyrénées is also steeped in history. You’ll find many traces left by catharism in the 12th to 14th centuries, like the castle of Montségur and the stunning historical towns of Foix and Albi. The region is dotted with picturesque medieval villages, which are among the most beautiful in France: famous Rocamadour, Saint-Cirq-Lapopie, Cordes-sur-Ciel and many others.
The cities are worth a visit too, not least the region’s capital, the ‘Ville Rose’ of Toulouse, with its Capitole and its lovely bike tracks along both river and canal. The Canal du Midi in fact stretches the length of the region, offering great cycling and strolling opportunities, as well as barge trips.
Two picturesque canyons in the region also offer great hiking, kayaking and exploration of castle and village ruins: the Gorges du Tarn and de l'Hérault.
