Head for the Basque country to taste the typical sheep's cheese, served with cherry jam, and to take in fabulous views of the Pyrenees, sheer Atlantic cliffs and fine sandy beaches.
Saint-Jean-de-Luz is a charming fishing village which is typically Basque, with white houses adorned with brightly-coloured touches. It’s a lively spot, full of character, with lots of bars and restaurants. It is a stone's throw from Biarritz and Bayonne too, making it an ideal base for exploring the Pyrénées-Atlantiques region, as well as for taking day trips to San Sébastian and other parts of Spain.
The village itself offers no less than six beaches, including its Grande Plage Sud. Right in the town centre, this beach is in a protected bay, ideal for family swimming. Of the other beaches, Erromardie and Lafétinia in particular are surfers’ favourites. The coastal path linking Erromardie to the main beach offers breath-taking cliff views. For more ambitious hikes, the Pyrenees are close by. And even if you don’t fancy walking, you can enjoy the view from the top of the nearest mountain of Rhune by taking a traditional cogwheel train up.
