With green hills and fields everywhere, and no shortage of dramatic cliffs and breath-taking sea views, Ireland is not called the Emerald Isle by chance. An island surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean and Irish Sea, it is packed with opportunities for walking, cycling and watersports and is an excellent destination for holiday in the great outdoors. It also has a unique culture to get to know and friendly people.
Choose a campsite on the rugged west coast for excellent surfing and windsurfing off the Sligo and Mayo coasts, hiking adventures in the Connemara, Killarney or Glenveagh National Parks, or zip-lining through the forest and kayaking at Lough Key Forest Park.
Explore the picturesque towns of Galway or Westport, rich in history and pub culture, and take a boat to the beautiful Aran Islands, to explore them by bike.
Mountain-bikers will find their paradise a little further south, among the 98km of MTB trails in the Ballyhoura Mountains, including forests, rocky sections, tight bends and boardwalks.
There is also great mountain biking in the Wicklow Mountains on the east coast, nearer the lively capital Dublin, as well as a beautiful long-distance hiking trail to follow for a day or a week: the Wicklow Way.
